The Mom Rockin the Mohawk and Shaving Her Head

A week and a half ago there was a St. Baldricks event held in our town.  If you aren't familiar with the St. Baldrick's Foundation you should be!  It is a fundraising organization that raises money to benefit research for children's cancer research.  Founded in 2000, money is raised by pledges for someone to shave their head.  It was the first time that I attended the event, although this was the sixth year that it was held in our town.

Since we live in a rather rural county there is only one other mom who blogs.  Her name is Jeanne and she writes for Cafemom.  She is from the western part of the county, I'm from the east.  Makes us sound like were from Oz, no?  Well, although we keep in touch via Facebook, Twitter and the like we rarely see each other in person.

When I heard she was asking people to attend the event being held in my town, where she would shave her head, I told her I'd be there.  Now Jeanne has done this for several years, and the donations this year were slow in coming in.  So she rocked a mohawk for the weeks leading up to the event to raise the chatter, and subsequently the funds.

Don't you love how this year's shirt matches her 'do?

While at the event I was so touched to see children we knew from the elementary and middle school shaving their heads.  Friends of the boyz, teachers, high school students.  It was fabulous to see.  We were also proud to have known one of the hairdressers volunteering for the event, our friend Erin who cuts the boyz hair!

And then Jeanne had her 'hawk shaved...

They both rock!  Thank you Jeanne and Erin for inspiring me!

I loved seeing the community come together for a common cause.  It was great to see the around 50 shavees from our area give of themselves to raise funds for a cure to childhood cancer.  The event raised about $10,000 dollars for the cause.  If you would like to donate, please visit the website for the event.

All five of my boyz, Daddy D included, have decided that if the event is held again next year they will be shaving their heads.  I can't wait!
